Unplugged

Just for a while. I'm taking a small blogging break. I find that I'm addicted to blogging these days. I'm going to enjoy family time for a little while, but I'll be back and I'm sure I'll have some adventures my friends.

I think I might be getting carried away

I'm still embroidering around here. This is my latest FO. The original picture can be seen here. This is part of my airstream fantasy series. I'm thinking I will either frame them both, or turn them into pillows. I envision them backed with vintage barkcloth and pom-pom trim. I think the retro theme would carry through quite well.

Tara, my friend from Days Missed on a Hammock, graciously awarded me this award.

The rules...1. Please put award on your blog. 2. Add link to the person who awarded you. 3. Nominate 7 fellow bloggers for this award. 4. Add links to recipient. 5. Leave a comment so the recipients know they have received an award.

It's so difficult to name a few out of the many blogs I visit regularly, but here goes...

Bad Mom - a new friend that I discovered recently. I was surfing the net on m husband's Blackberry the other night while waiting for the movie and I was laughing so hard at some of her posts that I was in tears. Funny, funny girl.

Firefly Hill Style - we've been visiting each other's blogs almost since the beginning. She makes lovely handbags and is having some wonderful travels with her family this summer.

Jillian's Pages - a beautiful redhead with a penchant & eye for antiques. She launched her online boutique, Bella Rosa Antiques, this spring. Today she's featuring a nest of baby rabbits (my all time favourite animal) on her blog.

Juggling Life - she & some other ladies held their inaugural BitchHer Event, San Diego's new alternative to BlogHer 2008. Makes me want to move to San Diego. Not that I didn't have that idea before.

Miko Design - she screenprints beautiful textiles and sews them up into lovely bags, tops, and other items. She regularly posts beautiful pictures of her garden and family. Makes me want to visit the Netherlands.

My Diary of Domestic Hiss - wonderful stories about her life and family in Britain. Definitely a kindred spirit. I'm so glad I recently discovered her blog.

Roman Sock - this lady crochets the most wonderful creatures. Even better, she shares many of the patterns for FREE on her blog. I'm trying to make the meerkat for my husband.

A perfect day on my own

A perfect day in my town starts normally starts with a coffee & a book. That amber coloured liquid in the mug is not beer, just a spritzer that Lizzie was enjoying the day I took this picture. Lizzie is away for a few days camping with friends so today my day was child, husband, and work-free. I stayed in bed until the shameful time of 11:00. Got up and fetched a coffee. Came home, read for a while & spilled most of that coffee. Kept reading, trying not to get the tears I was shedding for my lost coffee all over my book. Went out, did a few errands. Came home and read some more. But that's not all...

I finished my book & felt compelled to get a few more from the library. This is the giant chess set that lives beside my local library. Normally there are a few people involved in a game, but today it was just too hot. I stopped and got another coffee & came home to read some more. Aaah.

This is one of the books I read today--The Penderwicks. It's a children's book and a very quick read. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading about the adventures of the Penderwick sisters, their friends, and pets. Lizzie read the book before I did & is currently writing her own Sabrina Starr adventure, inspired by the stories one of the sisters were writing. We both feel that this book should come to live at our house. We also feel that we should go & live in a cottage for the summer on the grounds of a cottage in Maine.
This is the other book--Some Kind of Miracle. It was written by the same author that wrote Beaches, which was that totally wonderfully sentimental classic chick-flick from the late '80s. You know the one that made many of us cry our eyes out. This book didn't make me cry, but it was a touching story about two cousins, one of whom suffers from schizophrenia. I'm working part time this summer as an undergraduate nurse on our city's psychiatric unit, so I've seen a few patients with schizophrenia in my work. It's a frightening & fascinating illness treated with the very scary medications with some horrible side effects. This book was another quick read, but thoroughly enjoyable. I had difficulty putting it down even to have a shower--I was forced to read and blow-dry my hair at the same time!

Well, I've had lots of coffee and done lots of reading. I even treated myself to sushi (my all-time favourite food). It's been a good day.

SPCA

Miss Lizzie came downstairs last Sunday with a plan. She decided to collect bottles and give the recycling money to charity. My favourite animal lover chose our local SPCA. Lizzie recruited her grandma, borrowed a wagon from our neighbours, and collected $28.05 in cans, bottles, and outright donations. Our plan was to take the money in and hopefully be able to take a dog or two for a walk.

My sweet girl proudly handed over the baggie full of cash, but unfortunately, you have to be a volunteer to take the dogs out. So we signed up! She was a bit disappointed that we couldn't go for a walk that day, but we still spent time with some of the animals. She spent a little time with this doggie.

But it was the bunnies that one both our hearts. This adorable little guy was only 6 months old and very cuddly. He was our favourite and for $15.00 we could have taken him home. Fortunately for my marriage (& my furniture & electrical wiring), reason kicked in and I realized the insanity of bringing a helpless little bunny into a house with two cats.

This little white bunny was also pretty cute, but someone else already had our heart.

He looks sweet & innocent but I think he was giving us the evil eye, or hypnotizing us or something. I kept hearing "take me home, take me home". It was hard to leave him behind.

This is a little chinchilla who also tried to charm us. Pretty soft fur, but he couldn't turn us away from the bunnies.

Lizzie & I will be going back to the SPCA this Wednesday for our orientation & then will be volunteering to work with the animals at least one day a week. I can't wait.

Speaking of bunnies, has anyone ever read Bunnicula?

If not, go to the library and pick up a copy. It's a wonderful children's story of a detective team consisting of a dog & a cat with a lot of attitude trying to solve the mystery of their new family pet....a rabbit whom they suspect could also be a vampire! Lizzie and I have read the book several times as well as the other James Howe books.

Cheesecake & hooters

Last night we had dinner at my in-laws (this is the lovely peaceful view off the deck in their backyard). My mother-in-law is an amazing cook and I always tend to overeat. We have rules for eating at each others' houses. We never let the visitor do any work, no cooking, no cleaning. Occasionally, I cheat and bring dessert. Last night I brought the cheesecake. Homemade with delicious graham cracker crust, milk chocolate cheesecake, & marshmallow meringue topping. Magnifique!

I didn't have a chance against this cheesecake. It was Smores Cheesecake and it was delicious. All three times I've eaten it in the last 2 days. I should be ashamed of myself, but it was just too yummy! I just finished a huge piece. Bigger than the one pictured above. These are Javier's fingers. I think he may be trying to send me a message about taking too many pictues.

My mother-in-law loves owls (hooters!) and she's accumulated quite a collection of pictures and sculptures. I was commenting how admiring many bloggers would be of some of her pieces and Javier suggested doing an "owl" post in honour of this collection. I only know the origin of a few of these pieces, but they are all darling.

These two little guys came home from New York on a recent trip my in-laws took. I put the spoon behind them to illustrate how tiny they are. They are made of glass.

They live on the kitchen window ledge with this little wooden owl. Isn't he lovely?

These guys live on top of the cupboard overlooking the kitchen and living room.

This sweet little guy lives on the piano.

These two pieces are waiting to be hung on the wall.

A close up photo of the smaller owl. Guess who embroidered this?

This was her first owl, starting the whole collection.

And this one lives on the mantelpiece.

Incidently, my mother-in-law was also my brownie leader when I was a young girl. I think the proper title is "Brown Owl"! I guess the tradition started early!

An assemblage of aprons

I had to turn to my thesaurus this morning to find a suitable word for collection starting with 'A'. Lookie what I got yesterday!

My mother brought me a bag of old aprons from my grandmother. I think most of them came from my great-grandmother and they are all handmade. What a treasure! These are a few of my favourites.

I really wish this was a skirt.

Tulips are my favourite flower and I love the ric-rac.

This embroidery is called 'chicken scratch' and I've wanted
to make an apron with this type of detail for a while. Now I have a pattern to follow.

Some yellow loveliness. So sunny.

This is not one of the aprons from the selection I received yesterday. This came from my Summer Sassy Swap partner, Amazing Mae, in June. She used fabric from my favourite designer, Amy Butler for this reversible beautify. She made the apron based on a vintage apron. Isn't it incredible?

The other side is this citrus print trimmed with a summery stripe. She also included this tea towel trimmed with jumbo ric rac and a matching pincushion which I absolutely love! Thank you Traci! You are amazing.

Any suggestions on how to display this collection?

Much better day

Actually I'm not sure if I feel any better but I'm being positive. I did what I could yesterday to feel better...I drank a litre of coffee, well actually just two rather large cups, I read a good book, "Tom Sawyer"ed my daughter into helping me paint the fence, drank several large glasses of wine, ate ice cream & popsicles, and then I just embroidered. But what did I embroider?

Yes it's true. I made myself an Airstream. I figure if I don't actually get to have one, at least I could have a embroidered picture of one around the house. And once again I realized--embroidery is much better than medication. This is a very rough picture I traced from a photo off the internet, but I think it turned out pretty cute. Maybe for framing, or I've also seen these made into throw pillows.

Thank you to my new friend Asthma Girl for this cute blog award. This always makes a girl feel better. After careful consideration, I pass this award onto

There are lots more of you that deserve this award. However, I just couldn't copy my whole blog roll in here today, but know that I enjoy reading all of your blogs.

Oh joy of joys

I think I might have woken up on the wrong side of the crab shack this morning, because I am CRABBY. There are several possibilities for this. Maybe it's because I got a 5:00am call for a hospital shift (which I declined). It could be because my otherwise perfect child has inherited my knack for dawdling, thus ensuring it takes 3 times as long to get out the door for softball camp as it normally should. Or maybe it's just because I'm expecting a little visitor tomorrow. You know the one. I'm not embarrassed to talk about it....it's my mother.

See this woman? She looks so innocent and cute in this photo holding her precious baby girl (uh, it's me). Who knew that one day she'd have the power to turn my adult self into a pouting, resentful little girl in a matter of minutes. Just a shadow of my normally confident and MATURE self. The one that is both a wife and mother. In fact, I will become quite similar to the young girl you see in the photo below.

Don't let that smile fool you for one second. I was in fact both pouty and resentful for most of my 14th year. Actually, that probably describes most of pre-teen and teen years.

My mother is a lovely woman and most of you would enjoy spending time with her. However, most (make that none) of you didn't have to spend a month in a one-bedroom apartment with her this past spring. For the few days that she will be visiting I will have a sore jaw from smiling with my teeth clenched, a headache from listening to so many stories in such a little bit of time, and a strong desire to hide in my bedroom for the rest of the week.

Of course, maybe I am just suffering from ...

I'm sure I will be an absolute delight to live with this week!

Another addition to the fantasy wish list

Back when we were dating and then newly married, Javier and I liked to camp. In the traditional style, we had a tent. Sometimes, it was so windy where we camped, we couldn't sleep all night. We honestly thought we'd blow away every night. And then there was the heat. We rigged up some handy little battery-powered fans, but they didn't do much. We usually just stayed outside during the day, which was okay until it got really windy. Lastly, there was the fact that we would have to pack up everything every night before going to bed back into our car or truck. We couldn't leave anything around the campsite for fear of bears.

Still, we loved it. It was our yearly getaway. Sometimes we were just two, other times we brought Lizzie along. She worked great as a mini-furnace that year we went camping in May! Occasionally we checked into a hotel midway through our adventure just to get a little bit of decent sleep. Between the wind, heat & insufficient air mattress, we got a bit overtired at times.

Then we made the 'mistake' of staying in our in-laws trailer one night. And we've never gone back to tenting. Call me spoiled, call me a princess. But if I  go camping now, I need to camp in style. A little air conditioning, running water, and gas stove never hurt anyone I say. Plus, I can always hide out from the wind.

Javier and his dad went shopping yesterday. I'd love to say this is what they came back with.
Can you just imagine pulling into a campsite with this baby? Okay, maybe not all of you are campers and really can't imagine, but just check out what's inside.

This is not your typical trailer. Check out the flat screen plasma tv against the back wall.

I could definitely wake up happy with all these windows surrounding. My own bedside table!

This little couch is just begging for me to sit down and read a book. I'd have to get busy maing some cute little pillows to spread around.

How cute and cozy is this?

Javier said he campaigned heavily for this model, but I think the new trailer will be more of a contemporary nature, not these vintage-style gems. Oh well, I'll still sleep in style and I can still make some funky little pillows.

However, I am officially adding this little beauty to my fantasy wish list. A sweet collaboration between Airstream and DWR

Ancient Medicine Hat pictographs

These ancient works of art were discovered in my backyard this past weekend. I have documented them to be used for future scientific study. Let's see if we can discover anything new about the people who may have created these paintings.

It looks like mushrooms, or toadstools, may have formed a large part of their diet. I wonder how they prepared them? Perhaps with a little butter, shallots & red wine.

Or maybe these mushrooms were poisonous. Used for getting rid of enemies?

Alternatively, they may have been more the recreational type of mushrooms, maybe for a little hallucinating? (not that I know anything about that, I'm just speculating of course)

Apparently these people were blonde. They had interesting hairstyles. I wonder how they were able to form those spikes using products gathered from nature. Hmmm. Perhaps, these people influenced the more modern punk styles. Obviously, the females portrayed in this particular pictograph were royalty.

Look at this! It appears that this ancient civilization had contact with some alien race. Perhaps they originated in space and were welcoming more of their own kind to this plant. Interesting that they already had such advanced written English skills. I wonder if they were visited by some Old World missionaries at some point. This could be evidence of diffusion of cultures in centuries & millenia past.

It looks like they also enjoyed the childhood ritual of "sleeping over". I wonder what significance this had in their culture. Was it a right of passage perhaps, or some display of bravery?

Very interesting. It appears they still got bored. Despite the wonders of nature surrounding them and the company of each other, they still could not find enough to entertain themselves. I wonder if this may have led to the extinction of their culture. Sad.

Thank you for visiting the Medicine Hat Pictograph Gallery. We've since determined that one of the artists was named Lizzie, accompanied by her friend A. The best estimate of the age of these paintings is 6 days. Unfortunately, rain has wiped away most of these creations. We are lucky to have documented them just in time.

Author's note: apparently I have way too much time on my hands these days!

And the winners are...

I wish I could send one to all of you. Of course, with the way I'm embroidering these days I just may be able to. No stress...just lots of embroidery.

I leave you today with a pic of this cute little car the girls and I discovered on our recent trip to Calgary. I can imagine myself zipping down the street in this sweet little roadster, perhaps in ballerina flats, capris, and a shirt a la Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face! The vanity plate said BEATNIQ. So Cute.
