SPCA

Miss Lizzie came downstairs last Sunday with a plan. She decided to collect bottles and give the recycling money to charity. My favourite animal lover chose our local SPCA. Lizzie recruited her grandma, borrowed a wagon from our neighbours, and collected $28.05 in cans, bottles, and outright donations. Our plan was to take the money in and hopefully be able to take a dog or two for a walk.

My sweet girl proudly handed over the baggie full of cash, but unfortunately, you have to be a volunteer to take the dogs out. So we signed up! She was a bit disappointed that we couldn't go for a walk that day, but we still spent time with some of the animals. She spent a little time with this doggie.

But it was the bunnies that one both our hearts. This adorable little guy was only 6 months old and very cuddly. He was our favourite and for $15.00 we could have taken him home. Fortunately for my marriage (& my furniture & electrical wiring), reason kicked in and I realized the insanity of bringing a helpless little bunny into a house with two cats.

This little white bunny was also pretty cute, but someone else already had our heart.

He looks sweet & innocent but I think he was giving us the evil eye, or hypnotizing us or something. I kept hearing "take me home, take me home". It was hard to leave him behind.

This is a little chinchilla who also tried to charm us. Pretty soft fur, but he couldn't turn us away from the bunnies.

Lizzie & I will be going back to the SPCA this Wednesday for our orientation & then will be volunteering to work with the animals at least one day a week. I can't wait.

Speaking of bunnies, has anyone ever read Bunnicula?

If not, go to the library and pick up a copy. It's a wonderful children's story of a detective team consisting of a dog & a cat with a lot of attitude trying to solve the mystery of their new family pet....a rabbit whom they suspect could also be a vampire! Lizzie and I have read the book several times as well as the other James Howe books.

Awww, that is sweet as can be. Cute as can be, too!

I did read Bunnicula as a child and my own daughter read them when she was younger too. She still has the entire series on her bookshelf. :)

The story of the man who wrote them is sweet too; I think that he wrote it with his sick wife, if I remember correctly.

Smart to leave that little critter behind. They're sweet but they require loads of upkeep... my BFF is frustrated with the one who resides in a cage on her kitchen floor - YES I SAID KITCHEN - because that is the only place to put it where ANYONE - and this includes the TWO LITTLE GIRLS THAT JUST HAD TO BRING IT HOME FROM THE SPCA - will even look its way let alone feed it or clean up after it.

Consider yourself warned.

Awww, how cute! I'm a sucker for animals. Oh all the girls in our family are. My oldest went to camp this summer at the Humane Society, she said it ranked as a tie for her favorite camp ever. I really would've loved to bring home one of those cute pups, thank goodness my better sense won out. I don't think hubby would've thought another small critter that eats and poops would be so cute.

Too cute! I would have had a difficult time leaving them all behind! But, volunteering is a great way to see them. "Good job" to Lizzie too for collecting all the money.

I'm quite grateful my girl isn't loitering over my shoulder just now. The bunny begging would begin again...

What a sweet girl you are raising. Good on you both.

And Bunnicula? Irresistible.

What a generous girl you have, and a fun way to spend an afternoon. I am a little afraid that my kids would also want to adopt every creature we saw...Will ponder.

Cute!

My girls have been collecting money for the SPCA and, this past weekend, went over with my husband to help walk dogs. They came back sweaty and filthy, but very happy.

Lucky is the house that has bunnies in it. The little dear your daughter is holding looks like our own sweet Alix. Both of our NDs are seven years old--kind of elderly for dwarf rabbits, but they are great pets. Go to www.rabbit.org for great information on living with house rabbits. Also, there is a wonderful book by Carolina James called "The Really Useful Bunny Guide." I recommend it to anyone considering keeping buns as pets. It really sorts out what you need to know to have a good relationship between humans and lagomorphs. My grandmother kept chincillas when I was small. Evil little monkeys they were, but I think they might have known they were destined for the fur trade. This was the 1960s, you know.

You are brave. I could never volunteer at the Humane Shelter: I'd be taking them all home when I hear that the ax is about to fall.
