The deep-fried event & a little ESP

It seems they can (and do) put every kind of food in the deep fryer these days. At least this is what happens at the Montana State Fair...and I'm sure at the concessions of every other fair in Canada and the US.

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the sign for deep-fried hamburgers. I had to take a picture to document this phenomenon.

For lunch, Javier was tempted by this greasy treat, which was surprisingly delicious, especially with a little pepper jack cheese, jalapenos and some sort of spicy white sauce. I admit to enjoying several bites too.

I settled for the more traditional deep-fried food - fries. However, I tried to "healthy" it up a little by choosing the sweet-potato fries. I don't think a little beta-caretene cancels out the fact that they were deep-fried. Mmm-mmmm, they were delish!

Lizzie decided on a deep-fried corndog. Her verdict? Too much corny batter, so she just ate the hot dog on the stick.

And we washed it all down with this!

Actually this turned out to be more of a dessert dish. The pepsi is mixed with batter and comes out of the deep fryer looking like little donuts. The "chef" pours some pepsi syrup over top, followed by whipped cream (from a can) and a maraschino cherry.

Look appealing to you? It was actually not all that interesting. Sort of like pancakes with all the toppings. A slight pepsi taste reminded you of what you were eating. Truthfully, it was a bit disappointing, but we can now say we've eaten deep-friend pepsi. This was Javier's special treat for dessert.

Lizzie decided to forgo the pepsi treat for some deep-fried shaved ice. Oh, wait a minute, this was the only thing we had at the fair that wasn't deep fried.

As for me...well there was no other option once I saw the word cheesecake on the menu. I chose the "Calamity Jane"--cherry cheesecake deep-fried (of course) in a pastry shell, then liberally sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon, and graham cracker crumbs. The dessert variation on the deep-fried hamburger.

This is what it looked on the inside. It tasted somewhat like one of the McDonald's cherry pies. Kind of overpowered by the outside sprinkles & not much cheesecake taste, which is what got me all excited in the first place.

This is me indulging in the "Calamity Jane". Not a most attractive photo. 10 days with two blow-dries and 1 makeup application = freedom, but a somewhat unattractive me. Subsequently, there are few photos of me on our holiday.

I did discover that I must possess some psychic powers. One night on our holiday I had this horrible dream that I missed a bunch of shifts because I was away & everyone at work was mad at me. The really horrible part is that they decided that as punishment I should be blackballed from every working at the hospital here in Medicine Hat. Not a good scenario for a soon-to-be registered nurse in a town with only one hospital! I woke up with tears in my eyes and a pounding heart. This should have been a sign for me to call and check when I worked next.

So what did I come home too? Three frantic messages from the unit trying to locate me for a shift yesterday morning. And when did I come home? Right. Yesterday afternoon. I'm sure no one has ever lost there job because they accidently missed a shift, but memories of that dream kept me up last night. I called and apologized, explaining the situation, but I still have this pit in my stomach. It took me a while to recognize the emotion--embarassment. We COULD have been home and I SHOULD have known I had to work, BUT we were'nt & I didn't. I will sheepishly go it to work later this evening & hope that everyone has forgiven me. Next time, I will listen to my dreams....

I'm off to detox from all the deep-fried food.

Sorry to hear that you missed your shift. Not a fun way to return to real life but I'm sure everything worked out okay!

The clocks are all on eBay. I'm quite an eBay buyer. I'll let you know if I decide not to use the pink clock with the timer as it is coming over from the UK! I ended up buying the black poodle clock, mainly because it had been serviced and ready to use whereas the vintage pink one isn't clearly so and yet is also expensive and I'm not interested in looking for a repairperson right away!

Oh dear. I hope they are kind and forgiving about the shift thing, especially while you are coming off the fry.

The detox is tough.

Glad you had a great time.

Hello! What a good time it looks like you had...the deep fried hamburgy looks De-lish and I LOVE sweet potato fries.

Don't worry about the missed shift...it happens to most of us at one time or another. The dream part is interesting though!
