Collaboration

A few months ago, my friend Dawn asked if I had a pattern for a jewelry roll. I didn't but I offered to help her make one. Last week we got together and trolled the internet for some ideas and went to the fabric store to purchase the materials. She brought the vision and I contributed my sewing experience and expertise. We drew out our own pattern and with a little trial and error created a beautiful travel jewelry case for her mother. She did most of the sewing herself, with a little pushiness advice from me.

Here is beautiful Dawn pinning together the final stages.

Here is the finished product. We found some gorgeous Sari Satin at the local Fabricland. It is a beautiful pale green that darkens towards a olive green towards the edges, with a gold pattern throughout.

It's a three fold case lined with ivory moleskin. We used heavy interfacing to keep the case stable and added a layer of felt for some padding.

We had to test out the case with her watch and my engagement ring. The four tabs are for necklaces and the pocket is for earrings. We used a piece of plastic mesh for the earring holder.

I will definitely make one of these again, maybe for Christmas presents (look away Auntie Ducky). I will definitely NOT use the sari fabric. It's beautiful, but nightmarish to work with. Also, I will make some modifications to the pocket as it still seems a bit awkward.

It was fun collaborating on this project. Usually, I just sit down and hammer out things by myself. We agreed that we will have to do something similar another time, once we are through with school.

Would anyone be interested in a tutorial or a pattern? I can't imagine when I would have time to do one, but can add it to my list of future posts if anyone would like to make one. I get so much inspiration by visiting blogs that it would be nice to give something back.

You both did an excellent job on it, and it looks so pretty! Well done sweetie!

Good job! And you figured it out on your own too! I'm a committed-pattern-follower! I don't wing anything with a sewing machine! I even keep my machine's instruction booklet close at hand for filling the bobbin! Seriously! Me and machines respect each other from a distance!

Baby, you're just what I needed. I've been looking for a jewelry roll for a while now.

Do you want to set up a little Oliver Rain/Saucy Swap? A fairy jar, perhaps? Let me know.

I enjoyed your memory lane pics of your toys...I'll have to post some of mine someday!

So, have we found out what the "T" stands for yet?
