Little things for a new little house on the block

I finally broke down and ordered a new dollhouse kit. Meet Arthur.

Pretty, no? This is the picture off the Greenleaf website. I'm thinking my personal Arthur will be yellow with white trim and probably a pretty red door. I haven't starting construction yet as I still have the cottage to finish, which will probably be going to the thrift store when complete, as I don't think Javier will let me have more than one dollhouse around here.

My mind is already reeling with possible decor ideas. I'm definitely going to add lighting as well as some wood floors and tiling. I'm already working on some of the interior decor.

This will be the living room rug, although there is a possibility I will go blind staring at a 28 count embroidery canvas.

These are some cushion covers I embroidered as well as a crocheted afghan. My goal is to make most of the dollhouse accessories. We'll see.

And just for kicks, here's a picture of my slightly grumpy, chilly Oliver wrapped up in my blanket.

The party of the year

For starters, Miss Lizzie's birthday is definitely THE party of the year, meaning it's the only party we ever have around here. I've been tempted to throw myself a party for the past few years just to mix everything up a bit.

This year's party wasn't quite the extravaganza that it was last year, but I think that as far as birthdays go it was still pretty fun. Of course, who wouldn't be thrilled with have 5 of your best little girlfriends over to celebrate YOU?

The highlight of the evening was the airbrush toenail painting. Aren't these sweet little toes? We have everything from zebra stripes to dragon flies to paw prints to palm trees.

Here's a close up of Lizzie's sunset themed toes. We are all longing for a definitive end to winter (the weather last few days has been pretty wonderful!)

Lizzie chose a rainbow cake, after we found this one online.

We started with these. Three boxes of cake mix and 7 different colours of gel food colouring. Thank goodness I have a bajillion Pyrex bowls to hold it all.

Which became these...

And thoroughly enjoyed this!

Other highlights of the evening included an impromptu game of Charades, hide and seek, a sleepover, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

I love watching Lizzie with her friends. Judging by the big smile on her face all evening and this morning, she definitely enjoyed her day.

Guess what?

I got a letter in the mail today.
Wanna know what it said???

I'm a REAL nurse now!

Friday the 13th happenings

It's a strange day.

First of all, while I am very very tired, I actually enjoyed my full day workshop today. It was a busy day, but I learned a whole lot about Pediatric emergencies. And I'm not grumpy (will wonders never cease?).

And then, when Lizzie and I were at Safeway buying things for dinner, I saw a lady that I worked with as a student who I haven't seen for more than 2 years. She was (and probably is) an incredible nurse who was very inspiring. She works in the community, so she's rarely at the hospital. She lent me a DVD, which I'm ashamed to say, still had, until I recently decided to carry around in my purse, so I would be reminded to give to her. And there she was at Safeway. So she got her DVD back. And we are going for coffee too. I like reconnecting with nice people. I think the DVD might have been a talisman of sorts.

Lastly, and this is by far the weirdest thing, Lizzie asked me today why I never made that "thick vegetable soup anymore". We went through a list of different soups I've made and we decided she was talking about butternut squash soup.  My child likes butternut squash soup??? and she's asking for it??? Very weird. But in a good way, I guess.

I'd better stay home. I just don't know what else can happen.

Don't look at me, I'm hideous...

Do I still have any bloggy friends out there? I've been woefully negligent to all of you and to this poor little neglected blog.

All I can say is that there's been a lot going on. Mainly, I'm studying. Yet again. I thought this studying crap (sorry for the coarse language) would stop when I finished my degree. First there was that pesky little RN exam (still waiting for results) and now I guess I have to get specialty certified for Pediatrics and Neonatal Care. Can you imagine? I've been reading non-stop for the past few days.

Then there was Achievement Day at Skating. Extra practices so the girls could learn there routine. One day we spent close to 3 hours at the rink! But that's over now.

The worst is that we've ALSO been suffering through a city-wide boiling water alert due to a burst water main. I refused to shower in murky brown water, so it's not been pretty folks, thus my blog title. The water cleared this morning however so I guess as long as I keep my mouth closed and not swallow any water I should be safe. But please, forgive the way I look....

I hope to get my spare time and blogging mojo back soon. Bye for now...

Ways to annoy your husband

Punch him in the arm and say "punch buggy, no return" EVERY time you see a VW Beetle while you are on holidays. Yeah, that doesn't get old at all!

Palm Springs holiday

When Javier first suggested Palm Springs as our conquer-the-mid-winter-blahs holiday, the first words out of my mouth were "only old people go there"! Perhaps not the most politically correct statement, but it does have a bit of a reputation though, you know. However, a little internet research revealed Palm Springs to be a mid-century wonderland, with plenty of shopping and relaxation to be had.

From the very beginning of our holiday, Javier and I were treated like royalty. The check-in agent took our boarding passes from us as we were waiting at the gate, passing time with our magazines and coffee. She handed them back to stating she gave us better seats. Well, yeah...she upgraded us to Executive Class! My 6'4 tall husband's legs were very pleased. The flight passed quickly in our luxurious seats and before we knew it we were in Los Angeles.

We always try to book Hertz because we have generally enjoyed really great service from them plus we are creatures of habit. Javier asked for a car with NeverLost, but the only vehicles with this service were the large SUVs and this....

For a phenomenally discounted rate, we drove this baby the entire trip. I called it the pimp-mobile, though Javier states it is more drug-lord style. Whatever. We certainly made quite the impact when we were out and about. EVERYONE commented on our ride. I generally go for a more under-stated look so I admit I was pretty mortified. But Javier enjoyed it and did say that it drove like a dream. And okay, it was fun zipping around with the roof off.

I preferred to take the passenger seat the entire time.

On our second evening, we took in the Palm Springs Village Fest on Palm Canyon Drive. Being from Canada where the average temperature at this time of year is below freezing, we thought the weather was quite balmy. We giggled at everyone so bundled up in parkas and scarves, when we just had light sweaters over our t-shirts. Check out the pink socks, capri pants, and heavy jacket above. Do you think she was "asking the rabbi" for fashion advice? We loved this booth, but couldn't come up with any really good questions for him.

The street fair was a popular event, though we were definitely in the minority as far as age and sexual orientation went. Most people we  saw were at least 20 years older than us or celebrating their alternative lifestyles. We kept seeing this one little tribe of people, all wearing turquoise satin bomber jackets with "The Rollin' Thunderbirds" written across the back. They were adorable, these men and women, all under 5'5 with very distinct New Jersey accents.

There was a lot of jewelry for sale, some pantings, and pottery. There are lots of very talented local artisans. Although it was all very beautiful, we had more  fun people-watching than anything. Palm Springs has its fair share of eccentrics.

I didn't find anything to buy until I reached a booth selling hand crafted flowers out of clay. These cacti are the perfect size for that dollhouse I still haven't finished! Even Javier thought they were sweet.

This is me acting silly in the desert, about to embark on our big hike in Joshua Tree National Park. It is truly unlike any place I've ever been too. But more on that in my next post...
